edit  3. Based on my expectations, I believe that I can get a higher grade in an online course because I control time spent on reading, research and studying. I find classrooms to be restricting and confining. Often professor's lectures have little to do with tests and essays. A textbook, emails to/from professor, and Google provide me with the tools I need to do well. A standard ground classroom is a waste of time from a grade standpoint. I expect to do better because I have more time to spend on items that are graded as opposed to the thoughts, opinions and philosophies of my educator. In an online course, what is expected of me is clearly laid out. In a ground classroom, there is too much talk and not enough rubric.  Mon, 5/7/07 10:31 PM

That, and most online courses seem to be more organized than ground based classes. Many online courses let you know what every assignment will be for the entire semester, at the start of the semester (not so much with ground based courses). I learn better on my own; I prefer an online course over a classroom course for most subjects.  Sat, 4/28/07 1:01 AM

They require minimal writing or discussion entries and the format is always the same: read a chapter, write a couple hundred words, respond to someone else's posting and maybe take a ten question quiz. There is no discussion or frank exchange of ideas. Learning comes from exchanging ideas: getting a good grade online comes from regurgitating what your read.  Tue, 4/17/07 1:54 PM

I suppose taking a class like mythology as an online course is probably easier than taking a math online course because it is mostly writing and I would do that on a computer anyway, as well as the outside reading I also would do at home. It is also very easy to contact my instructor if I need help, because I can email her from my home computer. If I recieve a higher grade it will be because of that. In my other class I have no clue on how to contact my instructor outside of class hours if I need the extra help, and the class makeup is still just mostly reading and writing.  Mon, 4/16/07 6:16 PM

Also, there is a certain degree of self-selectivity for online courses; they are convenient but require a great degree of self motivation. I took my first online course because the professor offering it at my community college was something of a religious zealot and I wished to learn the course content from a more objective perspective. Because I elected to take the course in a certain format, I was more motivated to succeed.  Wed, 4/4/07 8:15 PM

edit  93. I don't enjoy going to my college right now, because the community college experience simpily isn't what I thought I was looking for (no one is friendly, I don't enjoy attending the classes, the work is not challenging), and it's beginning to affect my grades. I spent a week with my cousin looking at the WSU campus in Pullman, and I thought it was awesome. I'm looking to transfer there for fall classes, so I can enjoy an actual experience away from home, and feel like I actually have a reason to attend school.  Wed, 4/4/07 5:50 PM

So the only way to really learn from an online course is to be very self-motivated and want to learn, so you resist the temptation to "get help" from you peers' work.  Tue, 4/3/07 1:49 PM

edit  14. This is the first online course I have taken. I make A's and B's anyway and I intend to make the same in this course. The material is challenging at times and also easy at times just like any other class I've taken in the past.  Thu, 4/26/07 5:42 PM
edit  15. Personally I find the on-line classes to be more challenging than the ground school courses. I expect to be graded fairly for the work I accomplish, and there is no difference if I am sitting in a class listening to lectures or doing the work on the computer.  Thu, 4/26/07 11:13 AM
edit  16. I have only taken one online class. The instructor was sick a lot during the semester and couldn't keep up with everything that he needed to. As a result, the entire course was very confusing - mixed up due dates, very long lag times in getting grades back, etc. As a result it was difficult to know if I was doing the assignments correctly.  Thu, 4/26/07 6:26 AM
edit  17. It takes a lot of discipline to complete an online course. Unless one is a motivated student and has excellent self control, I believe that online courses are harder.  Thu, 4/26/07 5:56 AM
edit  18. No I do not, because I have not performed well in online courses. As stated in question 7, I do not learn well in an online environment. I think I learn better if I am in a class and physically be in the presence of my teacher, enabling me to ask questions/discuss more easily. Overall, I do not expect to receive a higher grade in my online courses because I know my work reflects my inability to learn in an online environment, as opposed to the more quality work I believe I can produce in a ground class situation.  Wed, 4/25/07 8:08 PM

Also, since I am at home while doing the work, it is unlikely I will forget to take something to class. Another great advantage is that I can take tests as soon as I feel ready, instead of having to wait for a particular date and time. When I was taking ground school classes, it would happen that I would not be at the top of my game on a test day, and that it would negatively influence my score.  Tue, 4/17/07 7:50 PM

It is much more dependent on self-motivation, but is more convenient to do work on my own time rather than be committed to a certain number of in-class hours. I find that while sometimes the classwork requirements for an online class are easier (instructor expects you to read, but doesn't test you- things like this) it is balanced out by the fact that sometimes I have a really hard time with procrastination. If I don't physically have to be in class, this can be even worse. edit  98. Whether it be an on campus class or an online class, it really doesn't matter. People assume, and even I did when I took my first online class, assume there is less work. Really, though, there is probably more (depending on the class). For me, I like to work at home sometimes after printing my homework out. But others, I like listening to lectures and taking notes. It really just depends on the class.  Wed, 4/4/07 4:15 PM
edit  99. The online class uses more self-motivation and consists of just as much writing and sometimes participation that a ground school course would require, therefore I believe that my grade for the online class will be as good or bad if I were to have taken a ground school course.  Wed, 4/4/07 3:46 PM

If I expect a good grade for either I should also expect to work hard for it, not just assume that the course would be easier because it is online.  Wed, 4/4/07 1:02 PM
edit  103. The online course are more challenging. You have to spend more time during work. You have to due a lot of fiding things for yourself. You can't ask the teacher something right then like in the class. Online you have to e-mail the teacher and it may take time for them to get back to you.  Wed, 4/4/07 12:18 PM

edit  108. Although one must have good self disipline to do the work on time, and communiucation with the teacher takes a little longer, I do not expect to get a higher grade by doing so. The grades you acheive is based on your dedication to the work, and the knowledge leared from the course. This is the same wether its a ground course or an online course.  Tue, 4/3/07 3:17 PM
edit  109. Online classes have typically been harder classes. I was told my previous instructors that was the case because they make up points for in class activites. There are not as many points available.  Tue, 4/3/07 3:16 PM
edit  110. If an unfair grade was ever received, I don't think that is because the instructor was too lenient. I have had several experiences where something either goes wrong with my computer, or life gets in the way, and I have found that my online instructors treat me the same way my on-campus instructors do. Some are more lenient than others, but that is their personal preference.  Tue, 4/3/07 1:49 PM

I have received a lower grade for two courses, one online. The lower grade was for the first online class I took. I think one of the reasons my grade was lower in this class is because I wasn't sure what to expect. I also had to work on group projects almost every week. I was home-schooled for most of my educational career and I don't think I ever had to work in a group. I think the reason I got a lower grade in the other class was mainly because I couldn't understand the teacher.  Tue, 4/3/07 1:31 PM

If the instructor has a passion for what they are teaching and are creative in the execution of sharing this knowledge, online courses might be hard but enjoyable. One thing that really determines how well some one does in one of these classes has mostly to do with how much time and effort they are willing to put forth and how self-motivated they are.  Tue, 4/17/07 12:12 AM

edit  36. I have heard that some people think that the online courses are alot harder than thew ground based course. I prefer the onlince courses because I travel alot, and I can do my work anywhere with online access. I think the courses are equal in 'hardness". The online courses just fit my style better. I have no problem with the work, and communicatin with the teacher. Communicating with the students is harder, because they all do not have the same life schedual as I do, or may not care enough about the course to give it 100%.  Tue, 4/3/07 3:17 PM

edit  38. The nice thing is the lack of personality conflicts with an online class. I may not like the teaching style in one of my ground classes and sometimes that is a conflict for me. In my online courses I am not affected by this problem.  Tue, 4/3/07 9:34 AM

edit  40. I love on-line classes. With out them I would not be able to get my degree. When I took ground classes several years ago I was a 4.0 average.  Mon, 4/2/07 10:19 AM
edit  41. Our professor has always made the online classes interesting and interactive, with students wanting more information and asking more questions. Our online classes give students the ability to have class and interact all week, or for the allotted time period, whereas ground school classes have a few hours on a particular day and then class is over.  Sun, 4/1/07 10:01 AM
